Type Locality and Naming

Jiuquan Basin. Named the Shulehe Series by Sun Jianchu in 1942 and renamed the Shulehe Formation by Yu Boliang in 1952. Located in the vicinity of Laojunmiao-Shiyougou, Yumen City, Gansu.


Lithology and Thickness

A sequence of piedmont-fluviolacustrine deposits, consisting of grayish yellow or grayish white conglomerate, pebbly sandstone and sandstone and brownish red sandy mudstone with shale. The thickness is 1855 m. Its thickness is 700 m in the Jiuquan basin and 500 m in the Qilian Mountains and may reach a maximum of 1800 m.


Lithology Pattern: 
Coarse-grained sandstone


Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It has an unconformable contact with the underlying Oligocene Baiyanghe Fm.

Upper contact

It has an unconformable contact with the overlying Quaternary Yumen Fm.

Regional extent

It is mainly distributed in the Jiuquan basin and the Qilian Mountains.
